FOOD

Truly the most important thing in life & we've got it on lock:

The Flist: (food list)

Societi Bistro
(Kloof)
Can we say most delicious risotto & desserts & wine ever? Yes we can. Fancy, pricey (~R170 for a meal with a shared appetizer, small risotto, bottle of wine, and dessert), fabulous.

Sinn's Restaurant
(Wembley Sq)
Utterly sinful flavors - so bold, so intense, so delicious. You will forever regret your decision if you choose not to go here. So do yourself a favor and go. Winter special - R95 for an entree and wine. But don't forget to treat yourself to a dessert as well ~R40. Well worth it.

Eastern Bazaar
(City Center - Darling Street)
Completely relaxed and completely awesome. Curries, shwarmas, tandoori, samosas all for under R25. Don't mind if I do! Lunch break hotspot, go before 12 noon!

Beluga
(Waterfront)
Half priced sushis are a must must! The quality is good and there's a good variety. Sundays are half off cocktails as well. Order your drinks at the bar and get seated at a table to get your drinks for free. But you didn't hear it here...

Theo's
(Muille's Point)
Lunch special: 1 kg prawns for R99. Oh. My. God. The sauces are to die for. This is all you need to know - go now.

Crush
(City Center - off Green Market Square)
Healthy and delicious! Their bacon burger, soups, and Charmoula chicken sandwich are deelicious. Perfect drinks as well. Get a delightful meal for ~R50. Looking forward to lunch already.

Jardin
(City Center - Bree Street)
Regular meals here are fancy but decently good. Great service and awesome freshly baked bread. Go for the winter or seasonal special at R150 for a three course meal!

Arnold's
(Kloof)
Can we have a heart attack on a plate? Huge piles of meat - warthog ribs! Everything is big portions, scrumptiously big.

Taiwan City
(Canal Walk)
Surprisingly good Chinese good. And that's what I have to say about that. Get the Peking duck.

Mesopotamia
(City Center - Green Market Square)
Pricey for a casual lunch but I've never been disappointed with the taste of my food. Fresh pita, delicious sauces, mm baklava..

Dopple Zero
(City Center)
A classy yet relaxed place to eat. Extensive menu and generally good. Give it a go!

Royal Eatery
(City Center - Long Street)
Supposedly "best burger" in Cape Town. I say "most apathetic waitresses" in Cape Town. Plus I would take a Crush burger over a RE one any day. But, since their Vegetarian burger was pretty good I'll have to put it on the list. And I want one of their milkshakes.

Ocean Basket
(Kloof, Waterfront, Seapoint)
Cajun! Cajun! Cajun! Ask for their "special menu" for more options. Seafood for a good price - can't complain.

... to be continued soon!

DRANKS

After a delicious dinner the next logical step (if you haven't already had a bottle of wine to yourself) is to go for a drink.

Asoka
(Kloof)
The nicest place in town to go for a cocktail. Watching the bartenders here is like watching art in motion. Come for live music on Tuesdays. Also try the Chocolate Cake shot! Yum!

Mr. Pickwicks
(City Center - Long Street)
The opposite end of the spectrum in classiness, but a staple of long street. A good place to meet locals and internationals alike! Go for the drinks -- don't bother ever trying their chai.

Dubliner
(City Center - Long Street)
Loud & rowdy, even more pub-like than pickwicks. Lots of standing space.

Purple Turtle
(City Center - Long Street)
Smokey, this list just goes from classy to .. not.

Finger's Sports Bar
(Green Point)
If a normal evening here is like an evening during the World Cup Final be prepared to get deeply intoxicated off of free drinks!

Studio 2010
(Muille's Point)
Near the Waterfront. At times classy, at times relaxed. Changes depending upon the event. Drinks are nice but pricey.

Terra
(Waterfront)
A World Cup staple! Free snacks (biltong, wasabi peas, olives, cornnuts, chips, trail mix, etc), Free drinks (soda, water, beer, tea - super nice tea I might add, and coffee), and 6 screens (one to play FIFA on nintendo). A true trifecta.

Neighborhood
(City Center - Long Street)
Close to Royal Eatery. A nice atmosphere where you can find a mix between cultures - South African and foreign. From Thursdays to Saturdays expect different DJs who you can jam out to. Nice local drinks.

Cubana
(Cape Quarter)
A place where you don't want to go... high probability that someone will steal your stuff.

Cape to Cuba
(City Center - Long Street)
Best mojitos when made by the right bartender! Gingerbread cocktail was delicious! Give their inventions a try! Also try going on a night when their semi-hidden dance floor is rockin out with people who swing the other way.

CLUBS

After consuming more than 3 times your recommended dose of daily calories what better way to feel better about yourself than to dance it all off?

Jade
(Green Point)
No cover - nice balcony. Dress code - on the fancier side of things if you want to compete with the dolled up South African girls. (As one girl told me - we South African girls like our dresses) Good on Thursdays for top 40. Fridays for 80s. Saturdays for a mix.

Vaudeville - Fez
(City Center)
High cover -R100. But if you email for the guest list ahead of time (ask for the email of their manager at some point) or just insist that you did email the manager to be on it you can usually get in free of charge. (Being a girl helps) House music. Explore the venue, super cool decor.

Hemisphere
(City Center)
High cover - R60. Super smokey (disclaimer: Never expect to go into a club in Cape Town and come out smelling like anything but smoke). Nice view, not that you'll see much of it through the smoke and crowds of people. Speak to the bouncer, Mike, if you have a chance to get into the club again for free the next time. He's a nice guy, too bad I had no urge to go back.

Chrome
(City Center - off Long Street)
Rand a Brand Wednesdays. If you are a binge drinking college student and you've just arrived in Cape Town - go for it. Call or text to be put on the guest list. If you've been in CApe Town for a decent amount of time and are no longer accustomed to shit liquor then I suggest you spare yourself the nasty hangover the next day will bring you.

Chevelle
(Uncertain)
Supposedly the up and coming club in Cape Town. Depressingly empty the day I was there. Didn't see much of the decor except... watch out for the step every time you walk out of the lady's room.

Buena Vista Social Club
(Green Point)
Across from Jade - go on Sundays for salsa night! A fun and clean way to meet people or bond with new friends!

Kinky Afro
(Random)
Cover R80. A local party that happens every few weeks (once a month I believe). Interesting to catch if you can. Held in the CTICC. South African music and a mostly coloured crowd. Pregame beforehand - bar lines are ridiculous!

Dizzy's
(Camps Bay)
Unpretentious club that plays old school hip hop. Only place I've seen a dance circle open up - loved it.

Bronx
(Green Point)
Fabulous! Don't remember much of it (World Cup final night - what can I say) but its one of the few places open on a Sunday night. Also, easiest place to start a conversation "gay or straight?".

Knoxville
(Kloof)
Haven't been, but ladies hit it up on Ladies Night Wednesday!

FITNESS

Ok - so you've eaten and drank your way (despite all the dancing!) to some weight gain (read + 5 kg). Not to worry! We've got you covered.

Yoga Zone
(Strand Street - City Center)
A 2 week trial for 120 rand - great instructors, a great workout, and unlimited classes! You'll make your R120 back in two lessons but you'll be going back for more and more. Hot yoga so be prepared with extra clothes to change into after you've become a hot mess.

Virgin Health Club
(City Center)
A huge place with a swimming pool and a lot of classes offered every hour to half hour. Free trial day upon request. Befriend a personal trainer for free health and fitness consultation (;

Fitness Zone
(Cape Quarter)
A nice gym with new facilities. There's a great view from the running machines as well. Go with someone who has membership as a guest to get in free.

Women's Fitness Zone
(Kloof Street)
A spa, a tan can, and a lounge with free tea. Definitely caters to women but has super old (read ancient) machines. Worth a free try for a day. I would stay for the TV tea lounge but not for the equipment.

Renaissance Gym
(City Center - Bree Street)
Nice place with very high tech machines. They'll tell you when you're going too fast, too slow, out of range, etc. Plus the showers are pretty cool. Free 7 day trial - go for it!

Yoga Life
(Cape Quarter)
Free Trial here as well. Haven't tried it myself but they seem like a nice place, give it a try and let me know how it is.
